A 16-year-old boy and two adults have been arrested in connection with a carjacking that occurred on Wednesday evening in the Shaw neighborhood of St. Louis.
According to police, the 30-year-old female victim was walking to her car, which was parked nearby 4100 Shaw Boulevard at just before 8:40 p.m. She was suddenly approached by a man dressed in a gray raincoat. He was wielding a knife.
He asked her for the keys to her 2016 Nissan Sentra. She readily turned them over to him to avoid being hurt. He then got in her car and took off.
Within an hour of the carjacking, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center had begun receiving reports of sightings of the woman’s vehicle. They were able to track it down to the intersection of Clara and Natural Bridge avenues, an area that lies some five miles to the north of where the carjacking had taken place.
Officers were dispatched to canvas the area. They ultimately tracked the victim’s car down to the North Western Inn, located at 5720 Natural Bridge Avenue. Nearby the vehicle, they found a teenage boy, a 34-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman. They were all placed under arrest at the scene. They’re all suspected of having something to do with the carjacking or drugs found in the woman’s impounded car.
Violent crimes are unique from other types in that they often receive far more serious attention from Missouri prosecutors than petty offenses do. In recent years, lawmakers have instituted laws requiring judges to sentence criminals to mandatory minimum sentences in hopes that it would deter individuals from resorting to violence.
