Random check could be part of sex offender registration

Most people facing criminal sex crime charges are probably aware that the consequences for a conviction can be serious. While most likely know that they could end up spending time in prison, other potential consequences could be less understood. In many cases residents of Missouri who are convicted of a sex crime could be forced to register as a sex offender. If found in violation of the terms of this registration, a convicted individual could find that he or she is once again behind bars. In the course of this check, one individual was deemed to not be in compliance.

Law enforcement officers in one Missouri County recently conducted a random check of the homes of registered sex offenders to make sure they are following the rules associated with such a registration. These visits check:

  • That the sex offender lives at the residence.
  • For prescription medication.
  • Mail that has come to the house.
  • The state of their bedroom.

A total of 28 homes were visited in the course of the check. This was accomplished via a partnership between the U.S. Marshals and the county’s sheriff’s office. Most people would feel violated by such a search.

Because the consequences of a sex offender conviction are so life changing, it is in the best interest of the person facing sex offender charges to do everything possible to make sure those charges don’t result in a conviction. Accordingly, it is vital to contact a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. This could make a big difference in the outcome of the case.
